Urinetown
Urinetown is a satirical musical taking place in a dystopian future in which the government has placed a ban on private toilets. The show follows Bobby Strong, a poor custodian who rises as a leader against the oppressive government.
While designing for Urinetown, I chose to focus on the wealth gap highlighted throughout the show. One key goal of this show was to provide social commentary on the large wealth gap in today’s society. I chose to highlight this gap by using two styles: Grunge and Old Money. Grunge, which is often associated with social justice movements and defiance of societal norms, highlights Bobby Strong’s character and his resistance. Contrasting this with an old money style, which is associated with wealth and the upper class, highlights the class divide portrayed in Urinetown.
